Orchid Pages - Phalaenopsis Index
When I started my interest in tropical orchids I felt ambivalent about "Phals". I knew they were probably the easiest plants for our warm house and that they flowered for a long time. But I found many to be too bland, even, dare I say it, ordinary.  As I've got to know them a bit better I've discovered that while I still dislike the "Standard" Phals with their rounded shape, I have a passion for the "novelty Phals" with more star shaped flowers with thicker, often waxy petals. I like many of the species too.
The other thing I've discovered is that they are fine if I get them with a good root system, however many plants arrive with a decaying root system (becuase they have been overwatered) and take a while to recover, and by a while that can be a year or more!
